San Francisco 49ers’ Offseason Panned by NFL Analyst: ‘Doesn’t Feel Like They Got Better’
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers boast one of the NFL’s deepest rosters and are viewed as a legitimate Super Bowl favorite in 2024, but, not everyone is convinced general manager John Lynch advanced the ball this offseason.

Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema put together grades for all 32 teams’ offseasons, and was underwhelmed by what the 49ers have done so far.

“The Niners didn’t make a huge splash in free agency,” Sikkema points out, giving the 49ers a C+. “But signed some core players in Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos and Jordan Elliott.

They lost Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw from their defensive line but have the aforementioned new bodies to try to make up for it. Ultimately, San Francisco needs better offensive line play in 2024, and the only significant addition the team made there was third-round pick Dominick Puni. It doesn’t feel like San Francisco got better this offseason.”

Why San Francisco 49ers May Have Sat Out Free Agency

There’s an argument to be made that the 49ers didn’t necessarily need to get much better, based on the pieces already in place.

Likewise, given that San Francisco is currently projected to be upwards of $22.3 million over the cap in 2025, just as Brock Purdy is eligible to sign a contract that makes him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, it makes sense on some levels for Lynch and the 49ers not to have been big spenders this offseason.

The window for the 49ers to win a Super Bowl gets a little bit slimmer once Purdy cashes in, but, it remains to be seen if San Francisco did enough to get across the finish line in 2024.
