NFL insiders share what kind of impact Xavier Worthy will have on Chiefs offense
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have won the past two Super Bowls after losing Tyreek Hill, but they haven’t had the same explosive offense since Hill went to Miami. First-round pick Xavier Worthy may be about to change that.

The former Texas star ran the fastest 40 time in NFL combine history, clocking in a 4.21. Now he is off to play with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Kansas City.

NFL insiders Damien Woody and Dan Graziano spoke on Get Up Thursday morning about what kind of impact Worthy will have on the Chiefs offense.

“He’ll tilt the field, because he has something you can’t teach. You can’t teach speed,” Damien Woody said. “Speed is the one thing in any game, especially the game of football, that people are scared of.

“When you have that type of speed, I can tell you, on Wednesdays when we have our meetings, talking about players, he’s going to be the one guy that defensive coordinators are going to talk about, like, ‘Hey, look, he runs a 4.21. This guy has legit, world-class speed.’ So you have to prepare for that. And that opens things up for other players in that offense, as well.”

Graziano admits that it’s unfair to expect Xavier Worthy to come in and be Tyreek Hill, but he does believe that the additions of Worthy and fellow wideout Hollywood Brown this offseason will allow the Chiefs to do some of the things on offense that they did when Hill was there.

“Look, when you think about the potential of the Andy Reid Chiefs offense, you think about it with Tyreek Hill. Now can Hollywood Brown or Xavier Worthy be Tyreek Hill? Probably not,” Graziano said. “But can you do something with them that at least approximates what you were able to do when you had Tyreek Hill? I think that’s the thing. They haven’t been able to replicate it in any reliable way since he left.

“Even though they’ve managed to win two Super Bowls, the offense has not functioned with that ludicrously high level we were used to back then. So maybe one or both of these guys can unlock it.”

Xavier Worthy was a dangerous receiver and punt returner for the Longhorns last season. He caught 75 passes for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns, while averaging nearly 17 yards per punt return.

Now he is off to show what he can do in the NFL. Worthy landing with the Chiefs seems to be a perfect match.

“Xavier Worthy, he’s not a track guy. He’s a football player who has track speed,” Woody said. “That’s an important point to make.”
