Seattle Mariners' Righty Wins American League Player of the Week

After two dominant starts - and two wins - this week, Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert was named the American League Player of the Week by Major League Baseball.

Gilbert threw a complete game shutout on July 4 against the San Francisco Giants and followed it up with a seven-inning gem on Sunday in a 3-1 win against the Houston Astros.

Gilbert was the centerpiece of a huge week for the Mariners that saw them go 5-2 and get back into the fringes of the American League playoff chase. The M's took two-of-three from the Giants and three-of-four from the Astros to move to 45-44 on the year. They enter the All-Star break just six games back in the American League West and four games back in the American League wild card race.

After the win on Sunday, Gilbert is now 7-5 this season with a 3.66 ERA. Though he's been overshadowed by All-Star teammates Luis Castillo and George Kirby, he's been a major part of the Mariners ability to stay in the race this year, especially in the wake of injuries to Robbie Ray and Marco Gonzales.

The 26-year-old Stetson product is 26-16 lifetime with a 3.75 ERA. He helped the Mariners advance to the playoffs in 2022, when they beat the Toronto Blue Jays in the wild card round before bowing out to the Astros in the ALDS.

After the All-Star break, the M's will come home for a new series against the Detroit Tigers, who are hanging around the American League Central race.
