Michigan State football has picked up yet another commitment on Friday in the form of LSU cornerback Jeremiah Hughes.

Man, I have not seen recruiting momentum for Michigan State football like this in some time. I’m not sure even the previous staff who was praised for their recruiting powers was ever on a heater quite like this one.

No, these aren’t five-star transfer players like Ohio State’s Caleb Downs, but the additions have consisted of high-quality, immediate-impact players.

Earlier on Friday, MSU added UCF safety Nikai Martinez and just a few hours later, it landed a commitment from LSU’s Jeremiah Hughes.

Hughes stands 6-foot-0, 193 pounds and is a powerhouse at the corner position. He hit the portal after an impressive freshman campaign with the Tigers, playing in 13 games and showcasing his potential on both defense and special teams.

The Michigan State football recruiting staff continues to prioritize players with a ‘low-ego, high-output’ mindset as they set the program culture moving forward. The staff isn’t interested in formerly high-ranked recruits with only a year left of eligibility, they continue to add players with multiple years of eligibility remaining.

Hughes is from Nevada originally and was a high-three-star prospect coming out of high school. As a member of the 2023 recruiting cycle, Hughes has three years of eligibility remaining. With a host of offers from top programs and experience playing in the SEC, the young defensive back is a huge boost to a position group that has potential to be the strength of MSU’s defense.

For many readers, seeing “defensive back”, “strength”, and “Michigan State football” in the same sentence can be triggering. After bringing in four new faces in addition to sophomore cornerback Chance Rucker, there is a legitimate chance we see this position group become leaps and bounds better under the new coaching staff.

Coaches Demetrice Martin and Blue Adams have been working their tails off to flip a defensive back group they were not satisfied with.

Let’s get Coach Meat recruiting defensive tackles now — oh wait, he did that with Ben Roberts.
